Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) is on a roll sales-wise, and hybrids represent a growing percentage of this action. Canadian hybrid sales represented 7.5 percent of Toyota sales
and 22.6 percent of Lexus sales in October. Compare that to a just-reached 3-percent take rate for all brands of hybrids in North America among all production consumer vehicles.
In total, TCI sold 17,101 vehicles in Canada in October, up 14.2 percent, bringing the year-to-date total to 165,342, an increase of 23.4 percent versus October 2011. Several October records were established with hybrid sales, including both most Toyota (1,136) and most Lexus (344) hybrids sold. Hybrids represented 8.7 percent of total TCI sales.
Year to date, 14,949 hybrids have been sold, surpassing with two months remaining the previous full-year record of 13,546 set in 2008. Toyota hybrid sales came in at 1,136 units for October (up 186.9 percent), bringing year-to-date sales at 12,543 (versus 12,014 in 2008). Both these represent October records.
Prius family sales came up to 773 units (up 288.4 percent) and 8,677 year-to-date, which is the best ever total for the Prius lineup in Canada. Prius c sales accounted for 8.6 percent of overall Toyota subcompact sales in October while Prius v sales came at 3,523 units sold year-to-date.
Intermediate hybrid sales stand at 900 units for October (up 167.1 percent). Hybrid models accounted for 43.1 percent of all Toyota’s October sales in the intermediate car segment. Highlander Hybrid sales for October stand at 117 units (up 98.3 percent), for 867 units sold year to date (up 35.3 percent). Camry Hybrid sales ended October at 246 units (up 78.3 percent), with 2,999 units sold year-to-date.
“October was an excellent month, with strong momentum continuing for sales of trucks and hybrids,” said Tony Wearing, senior managing director, Toyota Canada Inc. “The Camry is #1 in its segment for the year. Meanwhile, on the luxury side, Lexus hybrid sales set a new October record at 344 units (up 109.8 percent); RX 450h sales came in at 71 unit (up 57.8 percent) and CT sales came in at 178 units (up 72.8 percent). This set a new sales record for the CT range at 1,407 units, eclipsing 2011’s full-year total of 1,350.
