ALTe Powertrain Technologies (ALTe) recently joined the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA). According to a release sent out Oct. 3, ALTe is the developer of the first range-extended plug-in electric hybrid powertrain used to power light commercial vehicles.
“Serving an essential role in the electric drive value chain, ALTe brings to EDTA an important perspective through their work on behalf of the fleet industry.” said Brian Wynne, president of EDTA. “Fleet owners can cut operating costs and serve as leaders in sustainability by implementing electric drive technology. ALTe is helping spur greater adoption of electrified transportation, delivering solutions for businesses that have shown a commitment to fuel savings and environmental stewardship.”
ALTe’s system will be retrofit into existing fleet vehicles while also being used in “glider” applications of new vehicles to dramatically increase their fuel economy and lower emissions.
Designed to replace a base V8 internal combustion engine powertrain, the system’s patented technology improves fuel economy, according to ALTe, from 80 percent to 200 percent. Based in Auburn Hills, Mich., the company is headquartered in a 185,000-square-foot facility where it assembles its powertrains that will be shipped to installation locations across North America.
ALTe recently formed a Joint Venture in China called MESA Industrial Technology Corporation. The JV is chartered to create a total of four assembly factories producing plug-in hybrid powertrains for bus and truck applications in domestic China.
ALTe has also partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative resulting in a project commitment to grow jobs and accelerate adoption of electric hybrid technologies through a novel order bundling Web site called ElectrifyYourFleet.com . Through this site, ALTe intends to bundle a very large order of electric and plug-in hybrid standardized vehicles. A small selection of vehicles will be offered to minimize complexity while driving common component volumes up to increase affordability.
